To
walk along Lon Las Ogwen south from Porth Penrhyn is like walking
hand in hand with the River Cegin. You can follow this part
of the path, which is also known as Lon Bach, through the shaded
woodlands of the Cegin Valley, past the industrial estate and
under the red sandstone railway viaduct, up to the village
of Glasinfryn.

The narrow gauge railway
was built by the Penrhyn Estate to transport slate from the
quarries at Bethesda for export at Porth Penrhyn.
By today, Lon Bach is part of Lon Las Ogwen, and comes under our management at
Gwynedd Council. One aspect which makes visiting Lon Las Ogwen a unique experience
is the sense of being surrounded and watched by nature, since the path leads
through a shaded avenue of trees along its 5 kilometer (3 mile) length.
You are welcome to get nearer the wildlife by wandering the riverside paths near
Glasinfryn, which have been provided for your enjoyment. Take time to marvel
at the architecture of the railway builders by the A5, as can be seen with the
viaduct at Glasinfryn. Its impressive arches once burdened with the weight of
the main line railway, now carries a lighter load in the form of pedestrians
and cyclists.
Lon Las Ogwen is an on-going project, and the ultimate aim is to extend the path
into Bethesda. Why not follow Lon Las Ogwen and venture further into the towering
Carneddau Mountains, the heartland's of north Gwynedd.
