Detour Route

Higham

We have included a short detour route from Lower Higham to Higham, as this is the village with strong links to Charles Dickens. There are also pubs in this village, which provide good food and accommodation. Rail transport is available at Higham Station with services to London and all towns within Medway.

Shorter Cycle Route
Cooling to Lower Higham or Upnor

For those who may wish to shorten the ride, to give you more time to visit some of the attractions or simply because you are exhausted, an alternative route is available. At Cooling village leave the Heron Trail (Route 18) and take the road signed via Cooling Street, past Gatton's Farm, into Cliffe Woods village. Then take the bridleway RS76 at Hilton Road and follow the path through the woods to Common Road, where you can rejoin Sustrans Route 1 back to Higham or Upnor.
