Burley On Your Backside

Distances: Regular route 21.2 miles
(1) Alternative Route - Turn right to reach road towards Burley. Turn left and continue until reaching the Station Tea Rooms. Continue towards Burley along the road until reaching junction at the top of the hill see note (2).

A. Cycle Experience (4.5 miles to next point)
Leave Island Shop and proceed down Brookley Road. Continue as far as Lloyds Bank and turn left here, along Sway Road. Follow road for 1 mile (crossing railway) until reaching T-junction. Turn right (towards Sway) and continue down hill, passing under railway bridge. Turn right off road and follow track to Cater's Cottage (please be considerate - people live here). Turn left off track before cottages to pick up old railway route through cutting. Proceed for 2 miles along this track, carefully coming off embankment to avoid two bridgeless gaps until road cuts off track.

B. Road Junction (1) (2.1 miles to next point)
Turn left onto road and follow down to Wootton Bridge. Cross Bridge (continue along road for 1 mile for Rising Sun Pub - returning here afterwards to rejoin route) and take next main gravel track on the right. Proceed through gate and into enclosure. Continue along track passing a main left turn until reaching a T-junction at the top. Turn right at the junction and continue until track forks. Take right fork and follow track through gate and on towards the A35.

C. A35 (Holmsley Toll) (2.2 miles to next point)
Carefully cross the road and head towards houses on the other side, after the "40 MPH" speed limit signs. Continue down the forest lane, crossing the disused railway until proceeding up an incline to meeting the road junction at the top (2). Cross road and follow signs towards White Buck Inn.

D. Burley (5 miles to next point)
Continue along Bennet's Lane, into Beechwood Lane and continue until reaching T-junction with road. (Turn left for Queens Head and Burley Village). Turn right towards Lyndhurst and turn left off road at next gravel track. Continue for 1 mile until crossing a tarmac track, and then another ¾ mile until reaching junction at top of hill. Turn right, down past Woolfield Cottage and then turn left again at the gravel track crossing. Continue along track, passing a left turning, until meeting a right junction with a short hill ahead. Ignore right turn and proceed through double gates at the top of the hill. Follow track of ¾ mile (ignoring one right turning) until reaching Bolderwood Drive.

E. Bolderwood Drive (4.7 miles to the next point)
Turn right onto drive and follow drive for 1 mile before carefully crossing main road. Pick up Rhinefield Drive, across the main road and follow for a short while until reaching a gravel forest track on the left. Continue along this track for a mile (around bends) before reaching a main track crossroads. Turn immediately left and continue along track, passing through a gate, and into the Conservation Area. Proceed past Deer enclosure (on the left) and through another gate. Continue for a further 1.2 mile until meeting a gate before a junction. Carry on through gate, keep right and pass through another gate. Cycle for ¾ mile until reaching another gate, which is before a T-junction. Turn right at junction and follow track down to Bolderford Bridge, which makes an excellent short-stop.

F. Bolderford Bridge (2.7 miles to next point)
Continue along track until it turns to tarmac at Ober Corner. From here, keep right and follow lane to Rhinefield Road, turn left onto road and continue for ½ mile before reaching the Forest Park Hotel. Pass the hotel and follow road around to the right until reaching Watersplash. Cross Watersplash on footbridge (or be brave!) and follow road through village, past shops, past Lloyds Bank, until returning back to the Island Shop.
