Local
cycle club West Highland Wheelers based in Fort William have Britains
biggest downhill cycle track on the slopes of Aonach Mor.
The
ambitious project will see the use of the Nevis Range Gondola
system to provide uplift
to the top station at 2000 feet from where riders of all ability will
be able to hurtle or pootle down to the base station at 200 feet,
covering
a course
of approximately 2-3 km. The unique uplift,
coupled with the largest vertical drop and length, makes the course
extremely
popular with both hardened racers and anyone wanting to have a try
at this
exhilorating part of mountain biking.
No
other UK venue can offer the magnitude of course and facilities on
offer at Nevis
Range and the Scottish race series have already booked up for a Y2K round
of downhill and cross country races. The ultimate aim for the club
is to
host a
world cup event which would see world wide coverage and representation
whilst having enormous potential benefit for the local area.
Making
this project become a reality has seen much hard work by the club
and the much needed
funds have been made available by the following extremely nice people:
